Healthy Chocolate Breakfast Cereal

Healthy Chocolate Breakfast Cereal

Oh my god, I’m in love!!! This is seriously better than any shop bought cereal ever and it takes less than 5 minutes to make. Crazy, right? I LOVE quick and simple recipes like this.

I had it yesterday for breakfast and it tasted like a mixture of coco pops and granola (completely free from refined sugar) and it’s the second breakfast recipe I’ve made from buckwheat groats (I’ve also made a banana parfait breakfast with it). It was so good I had to have 2 servings (oops) I had one serving with almond milk (and YES, it makes the milk chocolatey) and one with coconut yoghurt (which was my fave). It would be a great healthy and nutritious option for kid’s breakfast cereal and should last for at least 2 weeks (although more like 2 hours in my kitchen 😂) if stored in an airtight container  (I haven’t tried this, but have made similar recipes before that have been fine).

The health benefits of buckwheat include improved heart health (as it helps to reduce cholesterol and blood pressure levels), it’s high in fibre so good for improving digestion, it’s gluten free and a good source of plant-based protein.

I’ve had lots of people already ask me for this recipe, just through images posted on social media, so I’m really excited for people to try it. Don’t forget to tag me in your photo’s on Instagram if you make them. I would LOVE to see them and use the hashtags #staceyhogan #happyandhealthy 🙂

This recipe is gluten free, free from refined sugar, vegetarian, and vegan.

Ingredients (makes 5 servings with milk or 10 servings if having with yoghurt):

100g roasted buckwheat groats
75g dried cranberries
50g honey or maple syrup
1tsp. vanilla extract
30g chia seeds
100g gluten free oats
1tbsp. tahini
75g almonds
2tbsp. cacao powder
1.tbsp coconut oil

  1. Place all the ingredients (except for the coconut oil) in a large mixing bowl and mix well, taste the mixture, is it chocolatey enough for you? If not add a bit more cacao.
  2. Gently heat the coconut oil in a frying pan (depending on the size of your pan you might want to only heat half and cook the granola/cereal in 2 halves).
  3. Add in the cereal mixture and cook until you get a deliciously smelling chocolatey scent (about 2-3 mins).
  4. Serve and enjoy!
